Course Development and Urban Education Residency Program

The need for high quality urban teachers is almost universally known. As a recognized leader in teacher preparation, Illinois State University is currently taking steps to better address this need. One of these steps involves creating courses that are specifically designed to prepare teachers for the realities of urban and high need settings. Designing and offering such courses will provide a foundation for building an effective urban teacher education program.

The vision of this program is to provide students, from day one, with first-hand experiences in urban schools and neighborhoods.

Faculty Develop Urban Education Courses

Seven Illinois State Faculty from across campus who prepare students for teaching in urban settings participated in an urban education course development program. The program included a summer faculty-in-residence program hosted in Chicago's Little Village where faculty had the opportunity to become immersed in the community and collaborate with other colleagues. The selected faculty stayed in a neighboorhood home which will serve as Illinois State's first community-based student teaching residence in the fall.

The initiative will support the development of courses taught by participating faculty members to include a focus on urban education. Each faculty member will revise one course syllabi (i.e., course materials, assignments, ideas for units and lessons, and assessment processes) and include an urban clinical/field experience in Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood.
